Rules of Cricket that You need To Know
Most of us play cricket every day. It is someone’s hobby or someone’s career. But in the end, it is a game, and when it is a game of win and loses there are rules. We all know the common rules of cricket. But there are some rules which we don’t know or we are not familiar with. Today we will see some common rules and some advanced rules that you need to know about cricket.
Let’s see some basic rules of Cricket.
1. Umpires Decision is the Final Decision: This is the most basic and Important rule of cricket that the decision given by the umpire will be final. However, there is DRS (Decision Review System), but whenever the decision is critical the Umpire’s Call will be the final Decision.
2. Time Wasting: It is time-bound for everything. For the bowling team, they have to maintain the rate of 15 Overs per Hour. If the required rate is not maintaining the bowling team captain is given a penalty. When a batsman gets out, a new batsman should arrive on the ground within a minute. If he didn’t arrive in time then he will be given out.
3. UDRS: The Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS or DRS) is a technology-based system used in cricket to assist the match officials with their decision-making. On-field umpires may choose to consult with the third umpire (known as an Umpire Review), and players may request that the third umpire consider a decision of the on-field umpires (known as a Player Review).
These are some basic rules that are very important. Now let’s see some other rules that we are not aware of.
1. Obstructing the Field: The batsman is out if he is Obstructing the field i.e wilful obstruction or distraction by either batsman prevents the striker from being out Caught. England batsman Leonard Hutton was the first player to be dismissed for obstructing the field, while playing against South Africa in August 1951.
2. Substituting fielders: The umpires shall allow a substitute fielder if they are satisfied that a fielder has been injured or become ill and that this occurred during the match or for any other wholly acceptable reason. In all other circumstances, a substitute is not allowed.
3. Out Hit the ball twice: The striker is out Hit the ball twice if, while the ball is in play, it strikes any part of his/her person or is struck by his/her bat and, before the ball has been touched by a fielder, the striker wilfully strikes it again with his/her bat or person, other than a hand not holding the bat, except for the sole purpose of guarding his/her wicket.
4. Fair and unfair play – the responsibility of captains: The captains are responsible for ensuring that play is conducted within The Spirit of Cricket, as described in The Preamble – The Spirit of Cricket, as well as within the Laws.
5. No Bail Down: If the ball hits the stump but no bail falls down then the batsman is not out. This is the real heart attack for the Bowler.
6. Umpire not to give the batsman out without an appeal: Neither umpire shall give a batsman out, even though he/she may be out under the Laws unless appealed to by a fielder. This shall not debar a batsman who is out under any of the Laws from leaving the wicket without an appeal having been made.
